Picking Up the Pieces After a Flood

Dealing with serious flood damage at home is not the end of the world. And most importantly, it does not have to cost you an arm and a leg to get your home back into living condition again. In fact, you may find (like I did) that recovering from a flood gives you an opportunity to improve the look and feel of your home overall, and even to implement design options that increase the value of your property. I spent about a year fixing up my place after a pipe exploded while I was on vacation, and literally ruined everything inside from the flooring and walls, to my photos and important paperwork. So, I figured I could help others "pick up the pieces" and create a bigger ad better lifestyle at home by turning a flood situation into an opportunity, instead of dealing with it like a crisis.

Designing Your Dream Kitchen: A Guide To Picking The Right Countertop

by Scott Gordon

Countertops are important in modern kitchens as they improve aesthetics and functionality. They come in various materials, including quartz, marble, wood, stone, granite, and laminate. Choosing one that suits your needs depends on various factors, such as durability, maintenance style, and functionality. Below is an overview of the factors to consider when purchasing countertops for your kitchen.

Durability

The kitchen is one of the busiest places in the house, where activities such as cooking and cleaning occur daily. Therefore, your choice of material for kitchen surfaces should be strong and able to withstand kitchen activities without being easily damaged. Granite and quartz are examples of materials you can pick because they are resistant to heat and won't break or crack easily. They serve you for a long time without the need for replacement.

Maintenance

The kitchen attracts dirt and stains from cooking oil, food spills and splatters, mineral deposits from hard water, and fingerprints and smudges. These issues result in stubborn stains that require extensive cleaning exercises to remove. The type of kitchen countertop you install significantly influences the time and money you spend on cleaning and maintenance. If your kitchen is always busy, you should pick materials that are easier to clean and maintain without causing unnecessary disruption to the activities. An example of such a material is quartz. It's popular for being stain and scratch resistant. You only need soap and water to clean it.

Aesthetics

Your choice of countertops should reflect the overall design of your house and avoid situations of design and color clash. Countertops are designed to fit different kitchen styles, from traditional and rustic to contemporary and modern designs. For instance, consider marble and quartz options if you have a modern kitchen design and want elegant and attractive colors. On the other hand, wood and stone countertops provide a rustic and classic feel. You can also get countertops with customized colors that blend with the colors of your kitchen walls.

Functionality

Functionality is the ability to handle certain activities on your countertop surfaces easily. That means you should pick countertops that are practical to your needs. For example, if you cook and bake often, you should pick heat-resistant countertops with easy-to-clean surfaces. Scratch-resistant countertops are ideal if you have children and pets in your home.

Other reasons to consider when purchasing countertops include eco-friendliness, availability, and cost.
